Sweet potato dog treats!

I tried out the other recipe for dog treats! They came out pretty well this time over last. The original recipe calls for egg. My dog is allergic to egg. Every time he eats egg he ends up throwing up for a few hours. I read where you can substitute egg for apple sauce, bananas, yogurt, and a few others! I used apple sauce. I thought that it would go nicely with the sweet potato. My dog loves both sweet potato and apples! The treats are a nice texture I think, a long with the cheese ones I tried the other day. The apple sauce made them a little soft however I think they work for dogs because they are only a little soft on the inside. Nobody wants to eat a hard and brittle treat! The last picture is  of the finished treat.

1 cup of canned sweet potato

1 3/4 cup of wheat flour

1 beaten egg ( or 1/4 cup of unsweetened applesauce)

Roll dough out and use a cookie cutter for 1/4 inch thick treats. Bake at 350 for 20 – 25 minutes (mine took a little longer).

Bearded Dragons ; Awesome additions to the family

Ziggy is our friends Bearded Dragon! Eveytime I look or photograph him he always is alert and being a great model. He is pretty amazing to look at and makes a personable pet. Personality is in all creatures and Ziggy deffinantly has one! When he is looking at me I feel like he is studying me and is curious of why I’m there. Sometimes he looks as if he’s interested in the sound of the television. He will close his eyes when you pet him softly with a finger tip on is head. They let him run around everyday and he always likes to go to the cool tile area, or behind the tv ! (which isn’t safe, obviously!).

As much fun as Ziggy is he does take a lot of care. He is fed twice a day with crickets mostly and a few mill worms. He also has access to fresh lettuce or other vegetables daily. They bathe him frequently and make sure his cage is always clean of feces and vegetables that have been out for a while or wasn’t wanted by Ziggy. He has a set time schedule for lights and his bedtime. At night he goes to bed at 8:00 pm and wakes up at 7:00 am ! That is very important to Ziggy to insure he is happy and healthy.

Bearded Dragons can be awesome pets. If anyone ever is thinking about having a bearded dragon as a pet make sure you have to time to care for them as well as any  other reptile. This is just a few things I’ve noticed about Ziggy and his family. For all the information you need please check out : http://www.beardeddragon.org/

What is catnip?

We had our first experience with catnip last week! I never really understood what it was other than a natural herb for cats. The first thing I learned was that catnip is in the same herb family as mint. It was imported from Europe and now grows here in North America. The reaction causes a cat to become excited and then more relaxed. The chemical in the scent is what give them this reaction called nepetalactone. Some cats can be affected by catnip while others aren’t!

Frozen Peanut Butter Yogurt Dog Treats

The perfect snack to cool your pet down after a vigorous play session

Ingredients
• 32 ounces vanilla yogurt
• 1 cup peanut butter

Directions
1. Melt the peanut butter in a microwave safe bowl
2. Combine the yogurt and melted peanut butter
3. Pour the mixture into cupcake papers
4. Place in the freezer

You could even add some mushed up banana!

Healthy Pumpkin Balls

This snack is not only delicious but is also filled with fiber, vitamin A, beta-carotene, potassium, and iron.

Ingredients

• 1/2 cup canned pumpkin
• 4 tbsp molasses
• 4 tbsp water
• 2 tbsp vegetable oil
• 2 cups whole wheat flour
• ¼ tsp baking soda
• ¼ tsp baking powder
• 1 tsp cinnamon (optional)

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
2. Mix pumpkin, molasses, vegetable oil, and water together in a bowl
3. Add the whole wheat flour, baking soda, baking powder and cinnamon to the mixture and stir until dough softens
4. Scoop out small spoonfuls of dough and roll into balls on your hands (wet hands work best)
5. Set the balls onto a lightly greased cookie sheet and flatten with a fork
6. Bake approximately 25 minutes until dough is hardened

Both of these recipes are made without eggs! My dog is allergic to them and I know many others can be. Try to stick to treats will the bare, yet tasty, essentials!
